The director of the acclaimed 'Moon' (2009), Duncan Jones, helms this sci-fi action thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Soldier Colter Stevens (Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers that he is part of a government mission to identify the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. The experiment, known as the 'Source Code', enables its subjects to take on a person's identity for the last eight minutes of their lives. Colter has been programmed to relive the incident over and over again, piecing together clues until he can figure out who the suspect is and prevent another large-scale terrorist attack. Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright co-star.

As a review of the status of biogeography in the West Indies in the 1980s, the first edition of Biogeography of the West Indies: Past, Present, and Future provided a synthesis of our current knowledge of the systematics and distribution of major plant and animal groups in the Caribbean basin. The totally new and revised Second Edition, Biogeography of the West Indies: Patterns and Perspectives, emphasizes recent ideas and hypotheses in the field and includes many new chapters and contributions. The authors use the broadest possible interpretations of the concepts of biogeography, consider anthropological and geological factors, and discuss the conservation of endemic species. Drawing together contributions from the leading experts in biogeography and biodiversity, this book introduces new patterns and developments that add to our understanding of how plants and animals are dispersed throughout the region. Many contributions use new techniques such as molecular systematics to test older studies based strictly on morphological data. Unique in its inclusion of a wide variety of organisms and in its coordination of scientific data and conservation strategies, Biogeography of the West Indies: Patterns and Perspectives, Second Edition provides the only encyclopedic discussion available on the biogeography of the Antilles.

This timely book calls for a new approach to education policy and provides a new conceptual framework based on empirical research. Looking at the relationship between educational thinking and economic policy, it proposes ideas to promote change in the basic assumptions around education policy, providing suggestions for policy development. Education is in a state of continual change and schools are ever more diverse. People want more participation and meaning in their lives; organizations want more creativity and flexibility. Transforming Education Policy argues that a new paradigm is emerging in education, sowing the seeds of a self-organizing system that values holistic democracy.

Conflicts over the conservation of biodiversity are increasing and are serious obstacles to wildlife conservation efforts worldwide. Changing patterns in land use, over-exploitation, pollution, climate change and the threat posed by invasive species all challenge the way we currently maintain and protect biodiversity - from the local management of single species to the international management of resources. Integrating approaches from different academic disciplines, policy makers and practitioners, this volume offers a radically new, cross-disciplinary, multi-scale approach to deal with conflicts. Groundbreaking strategies for conservation are analysed and a large section of the book is devoted to exploring case studies of conflict from around the world. Aimed primarily at academics, researchers and students from disciplines relating to conservation, ecology, natural resources management and environmental governance, this book will be equally valuable to conservation NGOs and practitioners, and the policy community at national and international levels.

The explosion of spiritual teachings in recent times has offered countless paths to clairvoyant and metaphysical states of consciousness. This spiritual renaissance, including a renewed interest in Taoism, can be seen as a reflection of the modern individual's need to become aware of spiritual modes of perception and knowledge. However, many of these teachings lead to an ancient form of hazy, indistinct clairvoyance, argues Meyer, in direct opposition to clear, rational but spiritualised thought. Between Goethe's Taoism and Capra's Tao of Physics Meyer guides the reader to the most modern form of Taoism inherent in Rudolf Steiner's work, particularly his Philosophy of Spiritual Activity. Meyer traces the evolution of human consciousness, from the dreamy clairvoyance of Atlantis to the modern ability for clear abstract thought, and through to humanity's newly unfolding clairvoyant faculties.

This book is about doing discourse analysis. Its focus is on method, but the method is embedded in a wider theoretical perspective on social life, in the view of language as action, in the recognition that the social world revolves around talk (and writing). What is it that we accomplish by talking? Can we reconceptualize such traditional concepts as attribution and personality in discursive terms or shed light on applied topics, such as sexual abuse and legal adjudication? Doing Discourse Analysis: Methods for Studying Action in Talk and Text draws on conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis, pragmatics, and particularly, the discursive approach developed in social psychology. The book presents examples of actual discourse analyses, covers procedures of data collection and strategies for data analysis, and addresses issues of reliability and validity or the scientific warrants for discourse-analytic work. This book provides both the practical steps for doing discourse analysis and the theoretical justifications for these steps. It is an essential book for students and researchers undertaking discourse analysis. |
